Wastewater treatment as a water scarcity remedy for Africa

Managing Director Jörn Haase in an interview on the requirements of wastewater treatment on the African market.

The response of customers to the CUSS systems is very positive. Since CUSS does not sell "off-the-shelf" systems, each project is customised to the client's needs. This guarantees that the best technology and treatment method is installed for each project.

Which products do you sell most frequently in Africa?

The focus is on complete wastewater treatment plants for the food and beverage industry. These include aerobic treatment systems for low- to medium-polluted wastewater and anaerobic treatment systems for highly polluted wastewater (e.g. from breweries).

What are the unique selling points of your products that make them so popular?

CUSS not only supplies components for wastewater treatment, but complete solutions for the treatment of industrial wastewater. Together with the customer and depending on the needs (local wastewater regulations), the best treatment technology is selected to meet the required wastewater specification.

The CUSS service includes

  • the detailed design of the treatment plant
  • Procurement of all necessary equipment
  • pre-assembly in the CUSS workshop
  • delivery - DAP if required
  • turnkey installation on site
  • commissioning
  • training
  • Optimisation of the plant

At the client's request, CUSS can also supervise the construction work to ensure proper execution and minimise errors. To reduce construction work, CUSS can supply and install coated steel tanks for the reaction vessels. The equipment installed in CUSS plants is of high quality and from well-known and reliable European manufacturers.

How has Africa responded to the different methods of wastewater treatment?

The response of customers to the CUSS plants has been very positive. Since CUSS does not sell "off-the-shelf" systems, each project is customised to the client's needs. This guarantees that the best technology and treatment method is installed for each project.

CUSS treatment plants range from simple aerobic systems for small beverage bottlers to fully automated anaerobic / aerobic treatment plants with biogas utilisation for larger projects (breweries). All treatment plants are automated and controlled via a PLC.

What new technologies are there in the field of wastewater treatment plants in Africa?

he CUSS anaerobic treatment system has been improved to achieve better performance and much higher operational reliability even under difficult conditions. Membrane technology (MBR - Membrane Bio Reactor) has been added to the CUSS portfolio to meet the most stringent wastewater requirements and to reuse the treated wastewater (water saving in arid areas).

In cooperation with Chriwa Wasseraufbereitungstechnik GmbH, the wastewater from the MBR system can be further treated with an RO (reverse osmosis) system.
