Construction of a new industrial wastewater treatment plant for a chips factory in Pakistan

A producer of snacks and potato crisps from the Pakistani province of Punjab has commissioned CUSS to design and install a comprehensive wastewater treatment plant. This includes multi-stage mechanical and chemical pre-treatment as well as a combination of anaerobic and aerobic stages. To minimise the amount of sludge produced on site, a continuously running sludge press was provided to minimise the disposal costs incurred. The construction work was carried out by the customer, while the installation supervision, commissioning and training of the operating personnel was carried out by CUSS.

In close consultation with the customer, the necessary treatment steps were first planned on the basis of a comprehensive wastewater analysis.

As part of the mechanical treatment steps, coarse materials are first separated using curved screens and a primary clarifier. This is followed by the removal of other suspended substances using a flotation plant before the preconditioned wastewater is subjected to anaerobic treatment. The biogas generated in this process is properly flared for environmental reasons. The next step is to reduce the concentrations of nitrogen, phosphate and dissolved organic matter in the wastewater to the required discharge limits.

This takes place in an anoxic and aerobic process in a denitrification tank and in an aeration tank.

The reduction of primary and excess sludge takes place by means of a decanter.
